The Ambassadors of SADC countries hosted a lunch in honour of the former African Presidents : H.E. Mr. Joaquim A. Chissano of Mozambique, H.E. Mr. Benjamin W. Mkapa of Tanzania, H.E.Mr Thabo M. Mbeki of South Africa, H.E.Mr. Chief O. Obasanjo of Nigeria and H.E.Mr. Nicéphore Soglo of Bénin, during their visit in Japan to attend the Core Group Meeting of the Eminent Persons Group on Peace and Stability in Africa, which was organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan and the Nippon Foundation.
The African continent is now registering encouraging progress towards development and democracy. However, peace and stability issues in some parts of the continent remain a cause for concern for the international community.
The meeting provided an opportunity for former African Heads of States to share their experiences in leading efforts towards peace and stability in their countries and regions. The mains objectives of the meeting were to identify non-traditional means to consolidate peace and stability in Africa, and to make proposals to the International Community regarding a new approach to conflict prevention in the continent, and this, through open discussion among eminents persons.
The Core Group Meeting was held on 31 August and 1 September 2018 in order to define a conceptual framework and a modality exercise of the Plenary Meeting to be held sometime in 2019.
